Who said dance was only for girls! - SIG on Facebook

I’m not sure where this fits in with my other lines of inquiry but wanted to start a discussion on it and see what comes out of it.
I’ve started a new SIG group…not sure where it fits into some of my other lines of inquiry but thought it was an interesting subject area and would like to see what come out of it.

When I was teaching a class of 7-8 year olds last night, its full of girls and one boy. One of the girls said to me that she’s in school with the boy and he’s trying to keep the fact that he comes to dance lessons a secret as he doesn’t want any of the other boys to find out he does dance.

This made me think; why is it that dance is often seen as a girl’s activity?

Why do boys get judged for wanting to dance and girls perhaps don’t?

Do these judgements at such a young age have a knock on effect on the industry? (high volume of girls compared to boys/ not enough male dance teachers)

How can we challenge these ideas, that dance is only for girls?

Would be interesting to get both male and female views and experiences on this!!
